How Often Should You Receive Microneedling?

If you’re at all familiar with the collagen inducing microneedling process, you know how impactful the full length of the treatment can be – but how many treatments does one person need to actually see results? We will go over this and more throughout the article so that you come into your appointment with a full understanding of what to expect.

How often to get microneedling based on your skin concerns

The number of microneedling sessions for you is highly dependent on what skin concerns you want to address, and how much change you want to see in the quality of your skin. If you’re not sure what to expect, you can set up a consultation with your esthetician where they discuss what areas you want to target and set realistic expectations for your skincare journey. On average, you can expect anywhere from three to four sessions to remedy skin concerns such as acne scars, skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Acne scars can be corrected with microneedling

The most common microneedling treatment we see is microneedling acne scars. These side effects of acne breakouts can really leave you feeling like you have a limited number of options when it comes to improving your overall skin texture. Depending on the type of acne scarring and how deeply the scar is formed into the skin, your esthetician may ask you to come in every four to six weeks, committing to at least three treatments to see significant results. Deeper scars may require a combination of treatments for best results.

Microneedling acts as a great anti-aging treatment

For anti aging purposes, there are a few considerations that come into play when determining how many microneedling sessions may be needed. Firstly, are there any deep set lines or wrinkles on the face? Any Sagging skin? Stretch marks? If so, there is a strong likelihood that at least three to four sessions will be needed. The spacing between these treatments may also need to be longer if the client has a mature skin type. Individuals with mature skin may not recover as quickly, needing more time for wound healing and for their skin to recover between appointments.

Dry skin benefits from microneedling

If you find yourself constantly trying to battle with patches of dry skin cells and sun damage, microneedling benefits can be seen almost instantly. Rejuvenation for your skin can be achieved in as little as one treatment as newer, healthier layers of skin are brought to the surface.

Uneven skin tone is helped with microneedling sessions

Additionally, individuals who struggle with dark spots and uneven skin tone can find an improvement in as little as one to two sessions. You can discuss the extent of any discoloration and hyperpigmentation with your esthetician and plan out the number of sessions needed then.

Other questions to ask yourself related to microneedling

Before you start booking your sessions, make sure you have an understanding of these important topics.

When can you expect to see results?

Expect to see improvement in your skin almost immediately. Even if the results of the first session does not result in your skin looking as good as your desired end result, improvements should be noticeable following your first appointment.

How will the session go?

Upon arrival, expect to be greeted by your esthetician – they will go over any additional questions or concerns you may have. Once you’re ready they will begin to prep your skin by using a gentle cleansing towelette before applying a thin layer of topical numbing cream to the area being treated.

After waiting 20 to 25 minutes, it’s time to begin! The technician will use a pen-like tool with microscopic needles on the end and stamp it evenly across the skin. Once every part of the area has been treated, a soothing gel will be applied and your skincare professional will go over aftercare instructions.

Can you do other skin treatments after or before microneedling?

You can always customize your skincare treatments to cater to your needs. Discuss what other treatments or chemical peels you may want in tandem with your microneedling session and your esthetician will decide if these treatments should happen before, during, or after your microneedling session.

What are some tips to maintain results?

The best thing you can do for your skin is try to take care of it. Ensure that you follow your aftercare instructions to the best of your ability. Additionally, stay hydrated and make sure you regularly apply SPF to protect your skin.
