The Nighttime Skincare Routine You Never Knew You Needed!

The “I woke up like this” vibe is still on the table, and with the right nighttime skincare routine, you’ll be quickly on your way to waking up looking pampered, rested, and radiant. In order to achieve those skincare goals, you need an esthetician who knows exactly how to get you there! Here’s our best-case scenario for a nighttime skincare routine filled with tips and tricks from the pros.

How to order your nighttime products for the best results

You might have dialed in your daytime skincare routine, but your pre-bedtime routine is going to look a little different for a number of reasons–mostly due to ingredients like retinol and lactic acid doing their best work while you’re sleeping.

1. Unwind from your day by removing your makeup with an oil cleanser or facial balm

The best part of your day is absolutely removing your makeup and feeling brand new before bed. Wiping away the exhausting day you’ve had gives you a chance to take a deep breath and put the endless work on your plate aside while you practice a little intentional self-care. Double cleansing (oil cleanser) is usually the best at removing makeup and oil to clear out those clogged pores and tone your skin.

2. Follow up with your favorite cleanser

After you’ve taken most of your makeup off, follow up with a deep cleanse. You know the kind, the perfect water temperature, suds, bubbles, and working up a rich lather to wash away those lingering impurities. Whether you’re struggling with dry skin, or navigating acne with cleansers that have salicylic acid, it’s best to pinpoint your favorite cleanser as one that can do it all.

3. Pat your skin dry and exfoliate and apply your toner or hydrating mist

After you’ve cleansed your skin, gently pat your skin dry and use your favorite exfoliator (my favorite is the active peel pads from is clinical) to eradicate the dead skin cells that have been building up. You only need to worry about exfoliation every 2 to 3 days. This gives your skin a chance to shed dead skin cells and keep your skin from feeling irritated or breaking out.

4. Incorporate your custom skin care treatments

If you’re a big fan of the three-step skin care treatment, now is the time to use the big one! Maybe you’ve committed to that structure because it works best for you and individualized your own version of a three-step. Regardless, if retinoids are your new best friend, this is the time to use them. Retinol needs a chance to hit the skin before everything else at night. If you’re someone who is sensitive to retinol, you might want to layer a serum or even a moisturizer instead of using retinol directly on the skin. Or, you can try glycolic acid (sugar cane extract). Our best seller, active serum, delivers the same results of retinol without the irritation and redness, and it’s safe during pregnancy. This can help avoid redness and irritation, especially if you’re just beginning your retinol journey.

5. Serums before moisturizer to lock in nutrients

Serums are the key to all things happening subdermally. While plenty of serums based in hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, and vitamin B can work wonders on the surface of your skin, they’re also responsible for changing the chemistry beneath the surface. Serums are best applied right after your retinol before bed. Make sure to heed the proper order and let them all dry before climbing into a sweet slumber.

6. Apply your favorite eye cream and follow up with a moisturizer

Your favorite eye cream might be chock full of peptides or vitamin C, but regardless of its ingredients, it should be one of the last two products you apply before heading to sleep. After applying your eye cream, you can finish up with an all-encompassing nighttime moisturizer.

Optional step: Masks once in a while before cleansing

Sleep masks are everything. Each face mask is so unique and when used with a brilliant, nighttime skincare routine can treat your biggest areas of concern. Sleep masks go on overnight, and they are designed to deeply nourish your skin. They do a great job of treating dry skin and other issues, so don’t forget to snag yourself one the next time you’re shopping for your favorite skincare products. Our favorite is the blue moon retinol overnight mask from herbal skin solutions!

The hardest part of taking better care of your skin (for most people) is always the part where you have to find an esthetician that listens, considers your needs, and formulates a plan not just based on the products they’d like to sell, but treating you and your concerns with compassion and determination.
